Why Doors and Windows Are Sourced from Turkey

Turkey is one of the largest window and door producers in Europe and by a wide margin one of the largest exporters of steel security doors in the world. The reason is the same construction boom that built the furniture and machinery industries: decades of high volume residential development created profile extruders, glass processors, hardware makers, coating lines and thousands of fabricators, and then export demand from the Middle East, North Africa, the Caucasus, the Balkans and increasingly Western Europe kept them busy when the domestic market cooled. Very few countries have the whole chain from profile to finished unit in one place.

The single most important thing a buyer needs to understand is that a window is not one product from one company. It is a profile system, a glass unit, hardware, gaskets and reinforcement, assembled by a fabricator. The profile system defines what performance is achievable, because the system house has done the testing and holds the test evidence. The fabricator decides whether you actually get that performance, because welding, drainage, reinforcement and hardware fitting are where it is lost. Turkey has both: internationally known profile system houses and thousands of fabricators of wildly varying quality. Knowing which system is being used, and which fabricator is using it, is the whole purchase.

The compliance framework is specific and unusually clear. Windows and external pedestrian doors placed on the European market fall under the harmonised standard EN 14351-1, which means CE marking and a declaration of performance stating classified values for thermal transmittance, air permeability, watertightness, wind load resistance and other characteristics. Fire resisting and smoke control doors add EN 16034 on top. These are not optional documents, and the declared values are the basis on which the product can lawfully be sold and on which a specifier can rely, so they belong in the enquiry rather than in the delivery.

What Turkish Door and Window Makers Actually Produce

PVC Windows and Doors

The volume category, built on multi chamber profile systems in 60 to 88 millimetre depths with steel or composite reinforcement, double or triple glazing and multi point hardware. What decides quality is not the appearance of the profile but the system depth, the number of chambers, the gasket arrangement, the reinforcement actually inserted into the profile rather than assumed, and the weld and cleaning quality at the corners. Ask which profile system is used by name, ask for the system's own test evidence, and ask what reinforcement is fitted in each profile of the quoted unit.

Aluminium Windows, Doors and Sliding Systems

Thermally broken and non thermally broken aluminium windows, hinged and lift and slide doors, folding systems and large sliding panels for projects where spans, sightlines or fire performance rule out PVC. Thermal performance depends on the polyamide thermal break depth and the insulation in the cavity, and the difference between a genuinely thermally broken system and a nominally broken one is large in cold climates. Confirm the surface finish specification separately: powder coating to a recognised quality label and anodising to a stated thickness class behave very differently in coastal and industrial atmospheres.

Curtain Walling and Facade Systems

Stick built and unitised curtain wall, structural glazing, spider and point fixed systems, ventilated facades and window walls. Steel Security and Apartment Entrance Doors

Turkey's flagship export in this category, produced in enormous volume for apartment entrances, villas and hotels, with laminated or membrane pressed panel faces, multi point locking, armoured cylinders and decorative finishes. The commercial questions are the sheet thickness and internal frame construction, the lock and cylinder brand and grade, whether the door is tested for burglar resistance to a stated class, and whether the finish will survive the destination climate. Where the door is an external entrance door it falls under the harmonised standard for external pedestrian doorsets and needs a declaration of performance.

Fire, Smoke and Acoustic Doors

Steel and timber fire doorsets with classified fire resistance and smoke control, acoustic doorsets and technical doors for plant rooms, stairwells and escape routes. This is a certification driven category with almost no room for approximation. Fire resistance is tested on a complete doorset including frame, hardware, seals and glazing, and substituting a hinge or a closer can invalidate the classification. Require the classification report reference for the exact configuration you are buying, and require that hardware is supplied as part of the certified set rather than sourced separately on site.

Industrial, Automatic and Specialist Doors

Sectional overhead doors, high speed roll doors, dock levellers and shelters, automatic sliding and revolving entrances, garage doors and hangar doors. These are machinery as much as building products: powered doors bring in safety requirements for force limitation, obstacle detection and emergency release, and automatic pedestrian doors on escape routes have their own requirements for behaviour in a power failure. Confirm the operator brand, the safety devices fitted, the cycle rating in openings per day and the service arrangement in your market.

This is where a project buyer can consolidate a lot of value with a single supplier, and where quality is decided by the core construction of the leaf, the edge banding and the hardware grade rather than by the visible surface. For hotel and residential projects, agree the tolerance for shade variation across a batch in writing before production.

EN 14351-1

Windows and External Pedestrian Doorsets

The harmonised standard that makes windows and external doors CE marked construction products. The declaration of performance states classified values for thermal transmittance, air permeability, watertightness, resistance to wind load, load bearing capacity of safety devices, acoustic performance and other characteristics. Those declared values are the product, so require the declaration for the exact configuration and glazing being supplied rather than for a test specimen with different dimensions.

EN 16034

Fire Resisting and Smoke Control Doorsets

Applies together with the doorset product standard for fire and smoke doors and covers fire resistance and smoke leakage characteristics. Certification is for the complete doorset as tested, including frame, seals, hinges, closer, lock and any glazing. Changing a component changes the product. Ask for the classification report reference and the field of application, and confirm that every item of hardware is within it.

EN 1627 to EN 1630

Burglar Resistance Classes

Classify windows, doors and shutters from RC1 to RC6 by the tools, method and time a tested attack resists. RC2 is the common residential specification and RC3 is used where risk is higher. The class applies to the whole element including the glazing, the hardware and the fixing into the structure, which is why an RC2 door fixed with the wrong anchors into the wrong substrate is not an RC2 installation.

Air, Water and Wind Classes

Air permeability is classified from class 1 to class 4, watertightness from class 1A upward, and resistance to wind load by a pressure class combined with a frame deflection class. These three numbers describe how the window behaves in real weather far better than any marketing language, and they are what a facade consultant will ask for. Name the classes you require on the enquiry, since a higher class costs more to build and will not be offered unless asked for.

Thermal Transmittance

Define how the U value of a complete window is calculated or measured. Confirm whether a quoted figure is the whole window value, the frame value or the glass value, because they are very different numbers and the difference is often used to make a quotation look better than it is. Also confirm the reference dimensions, since U values are calculated on standard sizes and a smaller window with the same system performs worse.

EN 1279 and EN 12150

Insulating Glass and Safety Glass

EN 1279 covers insulating glass units including durability of the edge seal and gas concentration, and the tempering and laminated glass standards cover safety glass. Specify the gas fill and the warm edge spacer if you want them, ask how gas retention is verified, and confirm which panes are toughened or laminated where safety glazing is required by the destination country's rules.

Powder coating and anodising

Aluminium Surface Finishes

Architectural powder coating is normally specified against a recognised quality label with defined pretreatment, coating thickness and testing, and anodising against a stated coating thickness class. In coastal and industrial environments the pretreatment matters more than the paint. State the finish specification and the warranty period in the order, and ask for the coating certificate for the batch rather than a general statement of practice.

How to Buy Doors and Windows from Turkey

Six steps in the order that produces units which fit the openings, hit the declared classes and survive the journey.

    Name the profile system, not just the fabricator

    Ask which profile system is being used, from which system house, and in which depth. The system determines the performance ceiling and holds the test evidence behind the declaration of performance. Two fabricators quoting the same price on different systems are not quoting the same product, and a fabricator who is vague about which system they use is telling you they will buy whatever profile is cheapest that month.

    Specify the classes, not adjectives

    State the required whole window thermal transmittance, the air permeability class, the watertightness class, the wind load class and any burglar resistance or acoustic class. These are the numbers that appear on the declaration of performance and they are the only language in which two quotations can be compared honestly. Without them a supplier will quote the cheapest compliant build, which may be entirely adequate or entirely wrong for your climate.

    Pin down glass, hardware and reinforcement separately

    The glass unit, the hardware and the steel reinforcement are the three places where cost is quietly removed. Specify the glass build up, coating, gas fill and spacer type; the hardware brand and grade; and the reinforcement profile in each frame and sash member. Ask for a cut sample or a corner sample of the finished unit. A window is a hidden assembly and a corner sample shows more than a specification sheet.

    Resolve the fire and safety scope explicitly

    Identify which doorsets are fire or smoke rated, get the classification report reference for the exact configuration including hardware, and confirm that the hardware ships as part of the certified set. Confirm which glazing must be safety glass under the destination country's rules. This scope is regularly discovered late, and correcting it after installation means replacing complete doorsets rather than adjusting them.

    Agree measurement, tolerances and fixing

    Decide who surveys the openings and who carries the risk if a unit does not fit, agree the manufacturing tolerance and the required clearance around each unit, and specify the fixing method, anchors and sealing detail. On a burglar resistance class, the fixing is part of the classification. On any window, the perimeter seal is where most site failures happen, so make it part of the supply scope or make it explicitly not.

    Plan packing, shipping and the spares kit

    Glass and finished frames are damage prone and expensive to replace one at a time. Agree the packing standard, corner protection, palletisation and container loading plan, and require a percentage of spare glass units, gaskets, handles and hardware in the same shipment. Also agree how a claim for transit damage will be documented and settled before the first container ships rather than after it arrives.

Why does the profile system matter more than the fabricator's brand?
Because the system house holds the test evidence. Thermal transmittance, air permeability, watertightness, wind load resistance and burglar resistance are tested on a system, and the declaration of performance a fabricator issues rests on that testing plus their own factory production control. A good fabricator on a good system delivers what the declaration says. A good fabricator on a weak system cannot exceed the system's ceiling. A weak fabricator on a good system loses the performance in welding, drainage and reinforcement. So ask both questions: which system, and who is building it.
What has to appear on the declaration of performance?
For windows and external pedestrian doorsets under the harmonised standard, the declaration states the declared values or classes for the essential characteristics relevant to the intended use, typically thermal transmittance, air permeability, watertightness, resistance to wind load, load bearing capacity of safety devices, acoustic performance, and for fire and smoke doorsets the fire resistance and smoke leakage classification. It must relate to the actual product configuration. A declaration issued for a different size, a different glazing build up or different hardware is not evidence about what is arriving on your site.
Are Turkish steel security doors genuinely secure?
The good ones are, and the way to tell is to ask for a burglar resistance classification rather than for a description. The classes from RC1 to RC6 are defined by the tools, the method and the time a tested attack has to resist, and the classification covers the whole element: leaf, frame, lock, cylinder, hinges and glazing. Then check the fixing, because a classified door anchored badly into a weak substrate does not perform as classified. Many exported doors are perfectly good products sold without any classification at all, which is a commercial choice rather than a defect, but it means you are relying on inspection rather than on evidence.
How do I compare U values honestly between quotations?
Insist on the whole window value rather than the glass value or the frame value, and insist on the reference dimensions it was calculated at. A glass value looks impressive and tells you almost nothing, because the frame and the edge of the glass are where heat is lost. Then check that the glass specification in the quotation matches the one used in the calculation, including the coating, the cavity width, the gas fill and the spacer type. Two quotations with the same headline number and different reference sizes are not comparable.
What air, water and wind classes should I ask for?
It depends on your exposure, and your local building rules or facade consultant should set it, but the classification system gives you the language. Air permeability runs to class 4, watertightness upward from class 1A, and wind load resistance combines a pressure class with a frame deflection class. Exposed coastal and high rise locations need high classes and inland low rise locations do not. The point is to state a class rather than to ask for good weather performance, because only a class can be verified.
Can I mix hardware or glass sourced separately with a fire door?
No, and this is the most common expensive mistake in the category. A fire resisting doorset is certified as a complete assembly, and the classification report has a field of application that defines what may vary. Substituting a hinge, a closer, a lock or a glazing unit outside that field invalidates the classification, whatever the substituted item's own certificate says. Buy the certified set complete, including hardware, and keep the classification report with the handover documentation.
What lead times and order quantities are realistic?
Standard PVC and aluminium windows for a residential project typically run four to eight weeks from approved drawings, steel entrance doors in standard configurations three to six weeks, and curtain walling and unitised facades three to six months including engineering, sample and mock up stages. The drawing approval cycle rather than production is usually what determines the date. Minimum quantities are rarely restrictive; the practical unit is a container, and a mixed container of doors and windows is normally straightforward to arrange.
How does surface finish hold up in a coastal climate?
That depends almost entirely on pretreatment rather than on the coating itself. For aluminium, architectural powder coating against a recognised quality label with a defined pretreatment sequence, or anodising to a stated thickness class, is what survives salt laden air. For steel doors, the galvanising or primer specification under the finish decides the outcome. Specify the finish standard and the required warranty in the order, ask for batch coating certificates, and where the project is directly on the coast consider anodising or a higher coating class as the default rather than the upgrade.
Do Turkish doors and windows enter the EU duty free?
Industrial goods in free circulation in Turkey enter the European Union free of customs duty under the Customs Union, evidenced by an A.TR movement certificate rather than a preferential origin declaration. On bulky, high volume products where sea freight cubic metres are expensive, combining that with a few days of road transport is a substantial landed cost advantage. It does not change the product rules: CE marking and a declaration of performance under the harmonised standards are required exactly as they would be for a domestic manufacturer.
Should I buy windows and doors from the same supplier?
Often yes for PVC windows and interior doors, where a single fabricator can genuinely cover both and consolidation reduces freight and administration. Less often for steel entrance doors, fire doorsets, curtain walling and automatic doors, which are different industries with different certification and different factories, and where the best supplier for one is rarely the best for the others. A trading company can present a single face across all of them, which is convenient, but ask which factory actually makes each item and require the certification in that factory's name.
