Are Turkish woodworking machines good enough for a European factory?
For most workshops and mid sized factories, yes, and the reason is component sourcing. Turkish builders buy spindles, drives, controls, guides and glue systems from the same European suppliers as premium brands, so the parts that wear and fail are familiar and available. What you are trading away is usually build refinement, software polish and cycle time at the very top of the output range. If you run one or two shifts on standard panel work the difference is hard to justify paying for; if you run a highly automated plant where a minute of cycle time has a measurable annual value, the premium brands earn it.
Which woodworking machines cannot be self certified for the EU?
Under the current Machinery Directive several hand fed types appear on the restricted list, including hand fed circular saws, hand fed surface planers, hand fed vertical spindle moulders and hand fed tenoning machines, along with certain other categories. For these the manufacturer must involve a notified body through EC type examination or operate a full quality assurance system. A self declared CE marking on such a machine is not valid, and the machine is not lawfully placed on the EU market. Ask for the notified body number and the certificate reference before ordering, not on delivery.
What changes when the new Machinery Regulation applies?
Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 replaces the Machinery Directive and applies from 20 January 2027. There is no overlap period for machines placed on the market after that date, so a builder cannot keep using the old route indefinitely. The regulation adds requirements around digital instructions, cybersecurity and safety related software, machines with self evolving behaviour, and it revises the list of categories needing third party assessment. Machines already lawfully placed on the market before that date are not retroactively affected, but a machine you buy now will still be running well past 2027, so ask how the builder is preparing.
How do I compare edgebanders that look identical on paper?
Look past feed speed, which is quoted at a panel length that is rarely stated. Compare the pre milling unit and whether it is fitted at all, the glue system and its consumable cost, the number and type of trimming and scraping stations, the panel thickness range, the minimum panel length the machine will actually run, and the warm up time from cold. Then ask for a sample run on your own board and your own tape, cut it and look at the joint under a light. Two machines with the same specification sheet can produce visibly different edges.
What does the hardwood dust exposure limit mean in practice?
The binding occupational exposure limit for hardwood dust in EU law is 2 milligrams per cubic metre as an eight hour time weighted average, in force since 18 January 2023, and mixtures containing hardwood dust are treated at that limit. Do I need ATEX equipment for wood dust extraction?
Almost certainly for the filter, silo and briquetting plant, because fine wood dust forms explosive atmospheres. Two separate legal duties apply: the equipment directive governs what the supplier places on the market, and the workplace directive governs your zoning, your explosion protection document and your operating procedures. Ask the extraction supplier for the explosion protection concept in writing, including whether it relies on relief panels, suppression or containment, and where a relief panel would vent, because venting into an occupied area is a common and serious design error.
What lead time and payment terms are normal?
Standard machines from stock or short production runs typically ship in four to eight weeks; configured lines, CNC machines with special aggregates and complete production lines run twelve to twenty weeks depending on bought in components, which are usually the constraint. Payment is commonly thirty to fifty percent with the order and the balance against shipping documents or after a factory acceptance test. Insist that the balance is tied to a defined acceptance test rather than to a calendar date, and consider a letter of credit on a first order with a supplier you have not worked with.
Can I get software and control systems in my own language?
Usually yes for the machine control, since most builders use European control platforms that ship with multiple language packs. Be more careful about the cutting optimisation, cabinet design and CAM software, where the interface may be well translated but the manual and the support are not. Ask specifically which software is included, whether the licence is perpetual or annual, how updates are delivered, and in which languages support is actually available in your time zone rather than in principle.
How does duty work on machinery imported from Turkey to the EU?
Industrial machinery in free circulation in Turkey enters the European Union free of customs duty under the Customs Union, evidenced by an A.TR movement certificate rather than a preferential origin declaration. That is a real advantage against machinery from Asia, and road freight of a few days rather than weeks at sea reduces both cost and the working capital tied up in transit. It changes nothing about product compliance: the machinery, electrical and dust rules apply the same way whatever the tariff treatment.
Should I buy a complete line from one supplier or machine by machine?
Buy a line from one supplier when the material flow between machines is the risk, which is the case for automated panel plants with return conveyors, lifting tables and software driven sequencing, because one supplier owning the interfaces removes an entire class of dispute at commissioning. Buy machine by machine when you are building capability gradually, when you want the best machine in each category, or when your own team will design the flow. The common mistake is buying separately and then expecting one of the suppliers to take responsibility for how the whole thing works together.
