Why Pumps and Valves Are Sourced from Turkey

Pumps and valves are the highest volume mechanical components in almost every plant, building and water network, and they are bought differently from the machines around them. Nobody specifies a unique pump. They specify a duty point, a fluid, a pressure class and a set of dimensions that a replacement must match years later, and then they buy the cheapest credible supplier who meets it. That is precisely the shape of market Turkey competes well in: a deep foundry and machining base around Konya, Bursa, Izmir and Istanbul, decades of domestic water infrastructure and irrigation demand, and enough export pressure to have forced the better factories onto European dimensional standards rather than proprietary ones.

The commercial argument is interchangeability rather than novelty. A Turkish end suction pump built to EN 733 has the same shaft height, the same flange positions and the same footprint as a German or Italian pump built to EN 733, so it drops into an existing base plate. A wafer butterfly valve built to EN 558 face-to-face with EN 1092-1 drilling fits the same pipe spool as any other. Once the dimensional envelope matches, the discussion becomes hydraulic performance, materials, seals, certificates and price, and on those four Turkish suppliers usually price twenty to forty percent below Western European equivalents while shipping in days by road rather than weeks by sea.

The trap is paperwork rather than metal. Buyers frequently reject a good Turkish valve because it has no CE mark, not realising that under Article 4 paragraph 3 of the Pressure Equipment Directive a great deal of small bore and low pressure equipment must be built to sound engineering practice and must not carry a CE mark for PED. Conversely buyers accept a pump for a zoned area without checking that the ATEX certificate covers the actual non electrical hazard, or install a valve on a drinking water main without a national potable water approval. End Suction and Inline Centrifugal Pumps

The volume category: single stage centrifugal pumps for water, HVAC circulation, irrigation, firefighting and general process duty. Ask whether the hydraulics follow EN 733 for the ten bar building services range or ISO 2858 and ISO 5199 for chemical process duty, because those two families fix different dimensions and different mechanical seal chambers. Close coupled monoblock construction is cheaper and shorter, long coupled with a bearing bracket and spacer coupling lets you change the seal without disturbing the motor or the pipework, which matters far more on a plant that runs continuously than on a pump that starts twice a day.

Multistage, Borehole and Submersible Pumps

Positive Displacement Pumps

Gear, screw, lobe, progressive cavity, peristaltic and diaphragm pumps for viscous, shear sensitive, abrasive or dosing duties where a centrifugal pump simply will not work. The specification driver is the fluid, not the flow: viscosity at the pumping temperature, solids content and particle size, abrasiveness, whether the fluid is shear sensitive, and whether the pump can ever be run against a closed valve. Positive displacement machines need pressure relief protection by design, so a quotation that does not mention a relief valve or a pressure switch is incomplete rather than cheap.

Butterfly, Gate, Globe and Check Valves

The isolation and regulation workhorses in cast iron, ductile iron, cast steel, stainless and bronze. Three numbers make quotations comparable: the pressure rating expressed as PN or ASME Class, the face to face dimension series under EN 558, and the flange drilling standard, because EN 1092-1 PN 16 and ASME B16.5 Class 150 are not interchangeable even where the nominal size matches. For butterfly valves the seat material and the disc coating decide service life; for gate valves ask whether the wedge is resilient seated to EN 1171 or metal seated, because they suit completely different duties.

Ball Valves, Control Valves and Actuators

Floating and trunnion mounted ball valves, single seat and cage guided control valves, and the pneumatic, electric and hydraulic actuators that drive them. On automated valves the actuator is usually the harder part of the specification: torque including a safety margin for the seat friction, fail position on power or air loss, mounting interface to ISO 5211, enclosure rating, and whether the positioner speaks four to twenty milliamps, HART, Profibus or Modbus. PED 2014/68/EU

Pressure Equipment Directive

Valves and pumps are pressure accessories. The category depends on nominal size, pressure and whether the fluid is dangerous group 1 or safe group 2, and it decides the conformity assessment module and whether a notified body is involved at all. Below the thresholds Article 4 paragraph 3 requires sound engineering practice and forbids a CE mark for PED, which is why a perfectly compliant small valve can arrive without one.

ATEX 2014/34/EU

Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres

Applies to non electrical equipment such as pump hydraulics and couplings, not only to motors. The certificate must state equipment group, category matching the zone, gas or dust, and temperature class. Ask for the ignition hazard assessment and check what it assumed about dry running, bearing failure and impeller rub, because those assumptions are the whole basis of the protection.

Material Inspection Documents

Type 2.2 is a test report on the manufacturer's own non specific tests. Type 3.1 is certified against the actual batch by an authorised person independent of manufacturing. Type 3.2 is countersigned by the buyer's inspector or a notified body. Specify which one you need in the purchase order, since the price difference is real and retrofitting a 3.1 certificate after casting is not possible.

Flange Dimensions and Ratings

The single most common cause of a rejected delivery. EN 1092-1 PN ratings and ASME B16.5 Class ratings use different bolt circles, different bolt counts and different raised face dimensions. State the standard, the rating and the facing on the enquiry, and for valves add the EN 558 face to face series so the valve fits the pipe spool that is already fabricated.

ISO 9906

Pump Performance Acceptance

Defines how a pump is tested against its curve and which tolerance grade applies, commonly grade 3B for general duty, grade 2B or 1B where efficiency is contractual. If energy cost matters over the life of the installation, name the grade and require a witnessed or certified test rather than accepting a catalogue curve as a performance guarantee.

Water pumps placed on the EU market must meet a minimum efficiency index, with MEI of at least 0.40 as the applicable floor, and the driving motors fall under the ecodesign regulation for electric motors with IE3 as the general requirement and IE4 for a defined power band. A cheap pump with a non compliant motor cannot legally be placed on the EU market, so confirm the motor efficiency class in writing.

Drinking Water Directive Approvals

Expect stronger documentation and higher prices than Konya, and better handling of non standard scope.

Bursa and Izmir

Waterworks fittings, municipal valves, fire fighting equipment and packaged pumping stations, driven by decades of public infrastructure procurement. Suppliers here are used to tender documents, type test reports and long warranty terms, which suits utility and contractor buyers. It is less natural ground for chemical process or hazardous area equipment.

How to Buy Pumps and Valves from Turkey

Six steps in the order that produces equipment which fits the pipework, passes inspection and can still be serviced in ten years.

    Write the duty, not the model number

    Give flow, head, fluid, temperature, viscosity, solids content, suction condition including available NPSH, and the required operating range rather than a competitor's part number. A supplier who receives a duty can offer the hydraulic that actually fits it; a supplier who receives a part number will offer the nearest thing in the catalogue and let you discover the gap during commissioning.

    Fix the dimensional envelope early

    State the standard the equipment must conform to: EN 733 or ISO 2858 and ISO 5199 for pump hydraulics, EN 558 face to face series for valves, EN 1092-1 or ASME B16.5 for flanges, ISO 5211 for actuator mounting. This is what makes the item replaceable in ten years and what stops a delivery being rejected on site for not fitting a spool that was fabricated months earlier.

    Settle the certification scope before pricing

    Decide and write down the PED category and module, whether ATEX is required and for which zone, the EN 10204 certificate type, any drinking water or fire safe or fugitive emission requirement, and the motor efficiency class. Every one of these changes the cost, and adding them after an order is placed is where schedules slip. A supplier who cannot answer these questions clearly is telling you something useful.

    Body material and grade, impeller and trim material, shaft material, and above all the sealing arrangement. Ask whether the mechanical seal is a standard cartridge to EN 12756 from a named manufacturer or a proprietary design, because a proprietary seal is a twenty year spare parts liability. For valves, seat and elastomer compound against fluid, temperature and any potable water requirement.

    For pumps require a performance test to ISO 9906 at a named acceptance grade, with a witnessed test on anything large or contractually efficiency bound. For valves require shell and seat pressure testing to EN 12266-1 and the specific fire safe or emission test if you specified one. Ask for the test certificates with the shipping documents, not on request afterwards.

Why does a Turkish valve arrive without a CE mark?
Because in many cases it must not carry one. Under Article 4 paragraph 3 of the Pressure Equipment Directive, equipment below the size and pressure thresholds that trigger a category has to be designed and built to sound engineering practice and is explicitly not CE marked for PED. A CE mark on such an item would be wrong rather than reassuring. Ask the supplier to state the PED category and the assessment route in writing so the file shows why the mark is or is not there, and remember that other directives such as ATEX or the machinery rules may still require a mark on the same item for a different reason.
Are Turkish pumps dimensionally interchangeable with European ones?
They are if the hydraulic is built to a standard rather than to a house design. EN 733 fixes the dimensions of ten bar end suction pumps, and ISO 2858 with ISO 5199 does the same for chemical process pumps, so a compliant Turkish unit shares the shaft height, flange positions and base footprint of any other compliant unit. Ask for the standard by name and a dimensional drawing before ordering. Where a supplier offers a proprietary hydraulic, it may well be a good pump, but you are accepting that the replacement in ten years has to come from the same source.
What does ATEX certification actually need to cover on a pump?
It has to cover the pump as non electrical equipment in its own right, not only the electric motor bolted to it. The certificate or manufacturer's declaration should state the equipment group, the category matching the zone in which it will sit, whether it is for gas or dust, and the temperature class. Behind it should be an ignition hazard assessment that considers dry running, bearing failure, impeller contact and static discharge. Ask what that assessment assumed, because if it assumed the pump never runs dry and your process can run it dry, the protection concept does not match your installation.
How do I compare quotations that all claim the same duty point?
Look at where the duty point sits on each curve. A pump running near its best efficiency point will consume less energy and last longer than one meeting the same flow and head far out on the curve, where radial loads and vibration shorten seal and bearing life. Then compare absorbed power at the duty point rather than motor nameplate power, the ISO 9906 acceptance grade offered, the seal arrangement, the material specification and the certificate types. Two quotations with the same headline duty can differ by a factor of two in lifetime cost.
Can I use Turkish valves on a drinking water network in the EU?
Yes, provided the wetted materials carry the approval the destination country requires. The Drinking Water Directive is moving the EU to common positive lists of permitted starting substances for materials in contact with drinking water, while national schemes such as KTW-BWGL, WRAS and ACS still govern acceptance in practice today. What gets rejected is almost never the cast body but the elastomer seat, the internal coating or a brass alloy with a non compliant lead content. Ask for the approval documentation for those specific components and check the expiry date on it.
What is the difference between PN 16 and Class 150?
They are different flange systems and they do not bolt together reliably even at the same nominal size. Do I need a witnessed factory test?

For large pumps, for anything where efficiency is contractually guaranteed, for critical process duty and for equipment that is difficult to replace once installed, a witnessed performance test to a named ISO 9906 acceptance grade is cheap insurance and gives you a documented basis for rejection. Agree at the order stage who attends, what the pass criteria are and who pays for a retest, because that is the part that causes disputes.
How does the Customs Union affect duty on pumps and valves from Turkey?
