Why Socks Are One of Turkey's Strongest Categories

Socks are the category where Turkey's position is not a marketing claim but a structural fact: the country is the second largest sock exporter in the world after China, and the sector's own trade body describes it in exactly those terms. The reason is concentration. Several thousand knitting operations, from single-owner workshops with a handful of machines to plants running hundreds, sit inside a handful of Istanbul districts, along with the yarn traders, dyehouses, boarding units, packers and machine service companies that support them. A buyer changing a rib, a gauge or a colour is dealing with a cluster, not a factory.

That density is what makes the category unusual commercially. Sock machines are relatively cheap compared with weaving or garment plants, so capacity is fragmented and competitive, and minimum orders are low by apparel standards. It also means quality varies enormously between suppliers who look identical from outside. The difference between a sock that holds its shape after twenty washes and one that does not is decided by yarn quality, machine gauge, elastane content, how the toe is closed and how the sock is boarded, and none of those are visible in a photograph.

For European buyers the logistics are decisive in a way they are not for bulkier goods. Socks are light, dense and high in unit count, so a full programme moves by road in days and reorders are practical rather than theoretical. Everyday Cotton Socks

Crew, quarter and ankle socks in combed or carded cotton with a small share of polyamide and elastane are the backbone of the industry. The specification that matters is gauge, meaning the needle count of the machine, plus yarn count and composition. Around 84 to 108 needles gives a chunky, economical sock, 132 to 168 is the normal quality band for retail, and above that you are into fine dress socks. Combed and mercerised cotton give a smoother, more lustrous surface than carded cotton at a real but not extreme cost difference.

Sports and Cushioned Terry

Performance socks use terry, a towelling loop knitted into the sole or the whole foot, to add cushioning, plus arch support bands, ventilation panels and reinforced heel and toe. Full terry, half terry and targeted cushion zones are all standard capability. Fibre choice moves from pure cotton toward polyamide, polyester and moisture-managing yarns, because cotton holds water. If the sock is for running or hiking, ask for the terry density and the elastane placement rather than only the composition, because those are what stop it slipping in the shoe.

Bamboo, Modal and Fine Dress

Bamboo viscose and modal give a soft, cool handle and are heavily marketed in this category. Two cautions matter. First, the fibre must be labelled by its correct legal name, which for most bamboo socks is viscose, not bamboo, under the EU fibre naming rules. Second, softness claims are easy and durability claims are not, because regenerated cellulosics are weaker wet than cotton. Fine dress socks in mercerised cotton or wool blends are knitted at the top of the gauge range and are a genuinely different product line from everyday socks.

Wool, Merino and Thermal

Merino, lambswool, alpaca blends and thick thermal socks are all made in Turkey, often by the same units in the winter half of the year. Merino is bought on micron and on whether it is superwash treated for machine washability, and the treatment is a real cost and a real chemical compliance question. Heavy thermal and boot socks use coarser wool blends with high terry density. Mothproofing agents, where used, are biocidal treatments and carry the obligations that come with them.

Diabetic and Non-Binding

Diabetic socks are defined by construction rather than by fibre: a non-binding top that does not leave a mark, a flat or seamless toe, no protruding internal seams, and usually a soft cushioned sole. They are ordinary consumer goods as long as no medical claim is made. The moment the packaging claims to treat, prevent or manage a condition, the product moves into medical device territory and a completely different regulatory route applies. Keep the marketing copy in the specification, not just the construction.

Compression and Medical Hosiery

Graduated compression stockings are a specialist product with its own machinery, its own testing and its own legal status. Where a product is intended for a medical purpose it is a medical device under Regulation (EU) 2017/745 and must be treated as such, with conformity assessment, technical documentation and a UDI. The German RAL-GZ 387 quality standard is the reference most European buyers use for compression classes and testing. Travel and sport compression sold without a medical claim is a different, much simpler product. Decide which one you are buying before you brief a factory.

Tights, Leggings and Pantyhose

Tights are not made on sock machines. They are knitted as fine seamless tubes on dedicated circular hosiery machines, then cut, joined with a gusset and boarded, which is a separate factory type with its own minimums. Specification is by denier, typically fifteen to forty for sheer, sixty to one hundred and twenty for opaque, plus composition, gusset type and waistband construction. Fashion tights, opaque childrenswear tights and thermal tights are all produced in Turkey, but a supplier who is excellent at socks may have no tights capability at all.

Claims That Change the Legal Route

Hosiery is where the wording on the pack decides the regulation. An antibacterial claim makes a treated article, a medical claim makes a medical device, and a bamboo claim is usually a labelling error. Settle all three before artwork.

Antibacterial and odour control claims

Any sock treated with a silver, zinc or other antimicrobial agent and sold with an antibacterial, antifungal or odour-killing claim is a treated article under the Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) 528/2012. The active substance must be approved for that product type, the article must be labelled with the active and the treatment, and the claim must match what is approved. This is the single most common compliance failure in this category, because the treatment is applied by a finisher and the claim is written by a marketer, and nobody checks that they agree.

Medical compression hosiery

Compression stockings intended for a medical purpose are medical devices under the EU Medical Devices Regulation. That brings classification, conformity assessment, technical documentation, a unique device identifier, post-market surveillance and an EU authorised representative for a non-EU manufacturer. A Turkish knitter can make the product, but the regulatory role has to be held by someone. Sport and travel compression sold with no medical claim stays outside this regime entirely, which is why the wording on the pack is a regulatory decision.

Compression class quality standard

The German RAL quality standard for medical compression hosiery is the reference most European buyers and reimbursement systems use for compression classes and their testing. Asking for compression measured and certified against it is how you avoid buying a stocking whose stated class is a marketing number. This is a testing and quality mark, not a substitute for the medical device obligations, and buyers regularly confuse the two.

The routine chemical safety certificate for hosiery, tested by product class according to skin contact. Socks sit in the direct skin contact class, and baby socks in the stricter infant class. A certificate covers a specific article from a specific supplier rather than a company in general, so check that the certificate number matches the yarn or fabric actually used and that it is still in date.

Azo dyes and CMR substances

Entry 43 bans azo dyes releasing any of twenty-two listed aromatic amines above 30 mg per kg in textiles with prolonged skin contact, and entry 72 restricts around thirty CMR category 1A and 1B substances in clothing in skin contact, applying since 1 November 2020. Both are dyeing and finishing issues rather than knitting issues, so ask which dyehouse is used and request reports on the dyed yarn, not on the finished sock alone.

Fibre naming and multipack labelling

Fibre composition must use the harmonised EU fibre names, which is why bamboo socks are legally viscose in almost every case, and must appear in the language of each member state where they are sold. Socks are usually sold in multipacks and in pairs, so the label carries the composition for the whole pack and errors propagate across a whole range from a single artwork. Verify composition per style against the yarn invoice rather than against the tech pack.

Producer responsibility and environmental wording

The revised Waste Framework Directive entered into force on 16 October 2025 and makes extended producer responsibility for textiles mandatory across the EU, with member states given twenty months to transpose it and thirty months to have schemes running. Separately, EU rules on unfair commercial practices now restrict generic environmental wording such as eco or sustainable without substantiation. Both obligations sit with whoever places the socks on the EU market, which under private label is the buyer.

Where Turkish Socks Are Made

Capacity is concentrated rather than spread out. These are the four places it sits and what each is genuinely for.

Istanbul sock cluster

The overwhelming majority of Turkish sock capacity sits in a ring of Istanbul districts: Yenibosna and Bahcelievler, Bagcilar, Gunesli, Sultangazi, Esenyurt and the Topkapi and Zeytinburnu area. Knitting workshops, yarn traders, dyehouses, boarding and packing units and machine service companies are all inside this ring, often within the same few streets. This is why sampling is fast and why a buyer can change gauge, yarn or design and see the result quickly, and it is the strongest single reason to source socks here.

Thrace: Corlu, Cerkezkoy and Kirklareli

The larger, more industrial end of the business sits west of Istanbul in Tekirdag and Kirklareli, along with much of the dyeing capacity that serves the whole region. Plants here run larger machine counts and are set up for high-volume retail programmes with consistent repeat quality rather than for fast fashion sampling. If your programme is a fixed range repeating every season, this is usually the better fit.

Gaziantep and the yarn belt

Gaziantep and the surrounding southeast are where much of the spinning capacity sits, supplying cotton and blended yarn to the knitting cluster. Some sock production has moved here and to nearby provinces on cost grounds. For a buyer, the practical relevance is upstream: knowing where your yarn comes from and whether it is combed, carded or mercerised tells you more about how the finished sock will wear than the knitter's own description does.

Anatolian production centres

Yozgat, Giresun and a number of other Anatolian provinces have attracted sock manufacturing through investment incentives and lower labour costs, usually as satellite plants of Istanbul companies rather than as independent clusters. They are competitive on long, simple runs. Development, sampling and complex design work almost always stay in Istanbul, so expect a split between where a sock is designed and where it is knitted.

    Specify gauge, yarn and elastane, not just colour

    A sock quotation is only comparable if it states machine gauge in needles, yarn count and composition, elastane and polyamide percentages, and terry type if any. Two socks that look identical at 96 needles and at 168 needles are different products at different prices. Ask for the gauge first, because it sets both the price band and the quality band before anything else is discussed.

    Decide how the toe is closed

    Toe closing is the most common complaint in this category. A hand-linked or Rosso-linked toe gives a flat, comfortable join; an automatic toe closer on a modern machine gives a genuinely seamless result; a cheap overlocked toe leaves a ridge that people feel. Each is a different cost and requires different machinery. Specify which you want and check it on the sample, because it is the detail most often downgraded silently between sample and bulk.

    Check boarding, sizing and shrinkage

    Socks are steam boarded on foot-shaped forms after knitting, and the form and the steam decide the finished size as much as the knitting does. Ask for the size chart in centimetres of foot length rather than in EU shoe size ranges alone, wash a sample to your care instruction and measure it again. A sock that fits the form and not the foot is the classic failure, and it is invisible until the customer wears it.

It also drives labelling, because a multipack carries one composition label for several styles and that is where errors appear.
