The Turkish cotton industry has cultivated this crop for over five centuries, with the Aegean region and in particular Aydin, Izmir and Manisa provinces producing the finest quality long-staple fibers. Today Turkey combines deep agronomic heritage with modern gin technology, producing between 750,000 and 900,000 tons annually depending on rainfall and planting decisions driven by global cotton prices. The country operates more than 1,200 ginneries and around 34 million spindle equivalents, giving it the largest integrated cotton manufacturing base in the Mediterranean basin.
Turkey is simultaneously one of the world's largest cotton importers and a significant exporter of value-added cotton products. Raw lint imports supply the domestic textile boom while Turkish yarn, fabric and made-up exports flow to Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the United States. This integrated upstream-downstream position gives Turkish suppliers unique leverage in both raw material sourcing and finished-goods negotiation, often winning contracts where speed to market and short lead times are decisive.
Sustainability has become the defining trend since 2020. Turkish cotton now leads the Mediterranean region in BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) enrollment, with over 200,000 hectares certified. Organic cotton cultivation in the Aegean and GAP (Southeastern Anatolia Project) zones has tripled since 2018, responding to European brand demand for fully traceable, GOTS-certified supply chains. Regenerative pilot programs launched by the Turkish Cotton Association in 2023 now cover 18,000 hectares with partners such as Patagonia, Stella McCartney and Levi Strauss & Co.
